His undergraduate degree was in Comparative Religion where he wrote an undergraduate thesis entitled “Hindu Temple as Microcosm.” His thought was to study something that he would never have a chance to delve into again given his desire to pursue medicine as a career. Having seen postcards of far-flung lands and hearing of adventures from fraternity mates that had graduated earlier at Dartmouth and had joined the Peace Corps, Arthur joined the Peace Corps in 1981 and served as a math and science high school teacher for two years in Larjung, Nepal. This was a life-changing experience for him. He remains somewhat fluent in Nepali and dreams of his days living under the hanging glacier of Mount Dhaulagiri.
Dr. Ide attended the University of Minnesota Medical School where he graduated in 1987. His internship was at the Marshfield Clinic followed by three more years at the University of Minnesota in residency in the department of Dermatology. His father Arthur Ide Jr was a surgeon and his mother, Nadine Smith, a dermatologist. After weighing the options, dermatology didn’t seem all that bad an idea and he followed in his mother’s footsteps joining her practice in 1991.
Arthur married Dr. Lisa Ragen in 1992 after she completed a residency in Emergency Medicine. They met on the wards at Hennepin County Medical Center, both in residency training at the time. It was a challenge convincing her not to return to her Seattle home and settle in the Midwest but luckily for him that was accomplished. They have four children, now either in college or have graduated, and live in south Minneapolis with their Labrador retriever, Cody.
Arthur spends his time cross-country and alpine skiing in the winter and playing tennis or golf in the summer. He has taken up biking on the country roads around the family lake place near Frederic Wisconsin. Arthur pretends to be a farmer there and owns two tractors, one of which is a 1952 Ford which requires constant maintenance and has no safety features at all. He and the family produce maple syrup in the spring and harvest apples and other fruit from a small orchard in the fall.
