What are Filler Injections?

Dermal fillers are made of clear gel like hyaluronic acid (HA) and infused with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after injection. Hyaluronic acid is a natural occurring substance that is already found in your skin that helps keep skin hydrated. Results can last an average of six months to two+ years depending on which filler is used, the amount injected, and which area is injected. Some dermal fillers are smaller molecules created to address fine lines and wrinkles or to add hydration to areas, whereas other fillers may be larger molecules placed deeper into the tissues, fat pads, or onto bone to create a lifting, contouring, or volumizing effect.

Juvederm®

Allergan Juvederm injectable fillers are divided into two different technologies/functions based on the consistency and methods of cross-linking technology used. To convert the hyaluronic acid molecules into a lasting, stable dermal filler, they must be cross-linked (or bonded) in a special method and suspended in a gel solution. The closer the cross-linking, the more hyaluronic acid molecules are concentrated and the thicker the consistency of the gel. Juvederm fillers with highly crosslinked hyaluronic acid molecules with the same weight are said to have Hylacross technology which includes Ultra and Ultra Plus. These filler injections absorb more water and are less flexible than others. Juvederm fillers made up of cross-linked hyaluronic acid molecules with different weights are said to have Vycross technology which includes Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella. Vycross technology lasts longer, is more flexible, and absorbs less water.

Restylane®

The Restylane Collection of HA fillers is also divided into two different technologies/functions: NASHA designed for structure and precision which includes Silk, Restylane-L, and Lyft, and XpresHAn designed for natural expression in motion which includes Refyne, Defyne, Contour, and Kysse. We have many different injectable filler options for you at Pinnacle Dermatology! While it may seem overwhelming with all of the different choices of injectable fillers, filler technologies, and areas filler can be placed in the face, we've become experts in Dermal Fillers and Injectables so that you don't have to! We offer complimentary consultations with our experienced injectors to discuss the Juvederm and Restylane Collections of fillers to help determine which filler is right for you.

Sculptra®

Sculptra is made of Poly-L-Lactic acid (the same substance used to make dissolvable sutures) and it is ground into a fine powder that is later reconstituted with Bacteriostatic Water to make an injectable filler solution. Over time, Sculptra breaks down and is removed by the body, leaving behind a new matrix of healthy youthful-looking collagen. Collagen is a fibrous protein in the deep dermis that gives skin structure and supports the functions of elastin and hyaluronic acid (HA), which helps maintain the skin's shape while keeping it smooth and hydrated. After age 20, we lose an average of about 1% of our collagen per year, which contributes to the appearance of aging. Most patients require three appointment sessions, using 1-2 vials of Sculptra per session over a period of a few months to replenish volume loss. Sculptra can be used to gradually restore volume loss in the temples, cheeks, and lower face. The number of appointment sessions and the number of vials required per appointment vary from person to person, depending on how much volume has been lost, and how many areas are being restored.

Kybella®

KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin for a gradually improved profile – whether you have a moderate amount of fullness, or a bit more. The active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring molecule that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. Once Kybella has been injected into the fat layer, the fat begins to break down, and the body responds by removing the treated fat cells and tightening the surrounding skin. The result is a more contoured appearance. Submental (double chin) is the only area currently FDA-approved, but Kybella can be injected off-label into any small pockets of fat on the face and body when done by a trained aesthetic professional. These areas include jowls, jawline contouring, bra and armpit "bulges", abdomen, love handles, knees, back of the arm, and to correct small pockets of fat that may be left behind in some post-liposuction procedure patients. A series of 3 treatments spaced 2-3 months apart, with multiple vials per session is required for most patients to completely contour areas but is dependent on the area(s) being treated, and the number of fat cells present in the area.
