Scars hold different meanings for everyone. A scar on the chin from a mountain biking stunt may represent a point of pride, reminding you (and others) of your taste for adventures. Scars from a tattoo or surgery can also symbolize strength for surviving a traumatic event or illness.
But do you associate these same positive meanings with acne scars?
In a recent post on acne treatment, we discussed why it’s important to treat acne early on. If this skin condition is left untreated, you run the risk of developing permanent skin damage in the form of dark spots or acne scars.
Why Does Acne Cause Scarring?
According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, “[a]cne scars are usually the result of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.” When our pores swell from bacteria, it causes a break in the follicle wall, causing lesions to form. Some breaks are deeper than others, and when this happens, our body’s natural response is to repair the damaged tissue with new collagen fibers, resulting in the formation of a scar.
The ASDS concludes that patients may experience two types of acne scarring: hypertrophic scarring (the overproduction of collagen, resulting in raised scar tissue) or atrophic scarring (a loss of tissue, resulting in indented scarring a.k.a “pockmarks”).
Though some acne scars may be permanent, there are many effective cosmetic dermatology treatments that can significantly reduce their appearance and allow you to get back to feeling confident about your skin.
- Fraxel Dual Laser Treatment
- Chemical Peels
- Acne Facials
- Kenalog Injections
- Photodynamic Therapy
- Skin Pen
Each treatment is designed to address the underlying issue of your skin condition, as well as improve your complexion for a healthier appearance. In addition to cosmetic services, we may also guide you to medical-grade skincare products to treat acne scars as part of your daily skincare routine.
