I’ve always believed that breast augmentation patients at my plastic surgery practice in the Naperville area benefit from having a range of breast implant options. The more options there are, the more opportunities to create custom results that are ideally suited to each patient’s body.
So the FDA’s recent approvals of new breast implants from Allergan® and MENTOR® are excellent news for women considering getting breast augmentation for the first time, as well as those who are thinking about exchanging older implants for a newer style. All of the recently approved implants are variations of anatomically shaped cohesive gel implants, sometimes called “gummy bear” implants.
Allergan’s new options include a style that offers extra full projection and an implant featuring lower height and low projection. MENTOR is introducing 4 new styles to give more choices to patients who want implants shaped to mimic the slope of natural breasts.
While these additional options add to the degree of customization that’s possible for breast enhancement patients, they also make the decision-making process that much tougher. As you can see, there’s more to breast augmentation than choosing a size. Projection, height, and shape are all critical factors that come into play.
This is why it’s vital to have guidance from a qualified, board-certified, experienced plastic surgeon. I talk my patients through each factor and explain that the same implants can look very different for 2 patients with different physical characteristics.
